Only a world we can imagine is a world we can also shape. But how far does our imagination truly reach? Do we only grasp for what we already know, polishing the old into something slightly friendlier, perhaps slightly more just? Or, do we dare to imagine something that has never quite been thought of before?
Our collective stories are saturated with dystopias, with collapse and exhaustion. These stories paralyze us, handing attention to those who profit from our failure to imagine differently. Envisioning means turning our gaze deliberately toward where possibility emerges: the in-between spaces, the cracks, and what lies behind the supposedly inevitable. This is especially important in the face of cruelty.
The Intag Valley in Ecuador is one such in-between space. It is a real utopia, not a thought experiment. A place with real people, real conflicts, and real resistance. For decades, the people of Intag have defied capitalist giants, protected their cloud forest, and demonstrated that a different order is possible in the here, in the now, and in reality.
PART 1:
The Power of Imagination (Lecture-Performance)
Futurist Ouassima Laabich, climate activist Tonny Nowshin and author Elisabeth Weydt interweave political analysis with original soundscapes and video footage from the Ecuadorian cloud forest. Together, they create an atmosphere where the boundaries between theory and experience become blurred.
The event will be held in English with German translation.
If you want to delve deeper, there will be a workshop on imagination as a form of resistance the next day. You will work on your own real utopia through the cloud forest with Ouassima Laabich.
