Xook k'iin Almanac
(Esta página existe también en español.)
At every moment in life, xook k’iin is speaking to us.
It makes us see that everything has a language.
The earth, the air, the animals, ourselves.
We are one more voice that we must listen to.
Nicolás Castillo. Maní, Yucatán
This calendar is a living memory of a shared journey. Its pages trace the route of the travelling exhibition Xook k’iin. Caminar el tiempo, which was shown in 2024 and 2025 at the U Yits Ka’an School of Agroecology in Maní, Yucatán, at the Fototeca Tuzik' in Quintana Roo, at the Centro Cultural Cecilia in Tinún, Campeche, and at iin ki kalante, Sede Cultural Independiente, Tecoh, Yucatán.
As we travel through the weeks, months, and years to come, we will delve deeper into the artworks created for this exhibition, and the processes, activities, stories, and conversations that unfolded around them. They invite us to engage with the complexity of xook k'iin—through cooking, playing, reading, gardening, and farming—and to record our own observations and experiences of the climate around us.
We want to share, in every text, image, and activity, the moments of this journey together; the people and places that accompanied this process; and the questions that, as from the beginning, continue to guide us:
How does the xook k'iin unfold in the celebrations and rituals we live and observe?
What do we hear, feel, and see in our homes, gardens, and yards, in the cornfields and the forests?
How do the cycles of the year, the moon, and water feel in our bodies?
Do we notice changes during the rainy seasons, droughts, and hurricanes?
What do they mean for our lives and our daily tasks?
How does xook k’iin relate to our languages?
How is it experienced and understood in other territories?
How can I approach xook k’iin if I am unfamiliar with it, and how can I share this knowledge?
The calendar has been distributed throughout Mexico, with peoples and partner organisations that have worked with us already for several years. It is this as such also a token of gratitude to everyone who has accompanied this project and shared their knowledges and practices with so much generosity.
