Join us for a reading and discussion with author and journalist Melina Borčak about her book Mecca here, Mecca there: How we need to talk about anti-Muslim racism. The event will shed light on racism against Muslim and Arab communities in Germany and will be accompanied by a Q&A session in which the author and German-Palestinian activist Abed Hassan will discuss key topics in greater depth.
Focus of the event:
The reading addresses how language can reinforce prejudice and critically examines terms, constructions and framings that promote anti-Muslim and anti-Arab racism in Germany.
Discussion topics:
- What lessons can we learn from the genocide in Bosnia?
- Are there parallels to the events in Gaza?
- How is anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian racism reflected in Germany?
The discussion will also take a look at repression against Palestinian and pro-Palestinian voices in Germany. Topics such as the restriction of cultural funding, the suppression of Palestinian spaces for discussion and the demonization of pro-Palestinian movements at universities and in society will be addressed.
Aim of the event: The reading and discussion is intended to stimulate reflection and create a deeper understanding - for everyone who wants to engage with anti-Muslim and anti-Arab racism. We want to hear your views, discuss them together and share practical tips for reflecting on your own language and learning from history.
