Each voice has its story, each body, its memories. From them emerge the threads that connect us, that weave communities and create the ties that sustain them.
In Latin America, orality (communication and knowledge transfer based in speech instead of writing) and corporeality have been key forms of resistance and resilience in the face of the colonial impact. Likewise, the migrant community in Berlin constantly rediscovers and reinvents its songs, its dances, its weaving, its memories and experiences in the complex process of migration.
With Canto Diáspora: Voices, Bodies, Communities, and Resistance, the Berlin-based women’s vocal ensemble, Canto Diáspora, invites you on the weekend of the 10 – 13th of October, exactly 532 years after the Conquest and the beginning of the Colonization of Latin America, to a weekend dedicated to creating spaces for reflection, (self-)care, and resistance for and with the community.
The event includes a series of workshops, talks and performances in which the powerful women of Canto Diáspora will share their knowledge, wisdom, creations, and experiences,, and invite you to engage with this history and its legacy in a variety of ways and to enter into conversation about it: How can we reconnect with dances of resistance and with their own corporeality? How can we free the voice that empowers us? How can we weave memories that ackowledge our histories and are equally based on who we are today?
This weekend is dedicated to all those women* who have historically and still are in the present, the caretakers and holders of our communities, in particular for those who are the most vulnerable groups amongst us.
Canto Diáspora will conclude and celebrate this weekend with a concert open to the public on Sunday.
