This event presents the photo exhibition, LAWAN! Portraits of Resistance Against Extractivism in Indonesia, which invites audiences to engage with the stories of communities defending their land, livelihoods, and ecosystems against large-scale resource extraction. Through documentary photography and contextual texts, the exhibition introduces movements throughout Indonesia, offering insights into both the impacts of extractivism and the diverse forms of resistance and alternative visions that have emerged affected regions.
The evening begins with a wayang (shadow puppet) performance by Indonesian artist Herlambang Bayu Aji. Suitable for both children and adults, the performance explores human–environment relationships through storytelling. This is followed by a talk with researcher and activist Dewi Candraningrum, whose work connects ecology, gender, and decolonial perspectives. After a Q&A session, participants are invited to join a guided introduction to the exhibition. The event concludes with a participatory zine workshop, with the aim of creating space for collective reflection and creative responses.
Watch Indonesia! is a Berlin-based organization dedicated to promoting democracy, human rights, and environmental justice in Indonesia.
The Wayang performance is suitable for both children and adults. The rest of the program is primarily aimed at an adult audience.
