Contrary to what nationalist and populist politics might suggest, food traditions and heritage are not everlasting or unchanging. They emerge, evolve, and sometimes disappear for a variety of reasons.
In this hands-on workshop by researcher Fabio Parasecoli, we will explore these dynamics and the cultural politics of food by playing with gnocchi. The history of gnocchi in pomodoro sauce begins with the Spanish colonization of the Americas and southern Italy itself.
During the workshop, we will prepare gnocchi to reveal the complex, globalized nature of this classic Italian dish. We will also consider new interpretations reflecting Italy's own history as a colonial power in Ethiopia and as a destination for migration from Eastern Europe and SWANA.
