UM~A – Open Rehearsal is an expanded choreographic work that reimagines rehearsal as a public ecology of relation. Rather than treating the studio as a preparatory space preceding performance, the work proposes rehearsal itself as a performative condition: a place where bodies, voices, memories and strangers continuously negotiate how to be together.
At the center of the project lies the question:
How can choreography become a space where new forms of belonging are rehearsed?
UM~A emerges from Tis Aly’s long-term research into broken ancestrality – a proposition that lineage is not inherited through stable traditions but generated collectively from rupture, migration, displacement and colonial discontinuities.
UM~A is open to anyone interested in exploring movement, voice, and listening as ways of engaging with ecological questions. It brings together people working across the arts, music, vocal practice, activism, and healthcare, as well as those engaged with collective practices, constellations, and cosmologies rooted in the Global South.
Together, we explore the forces that set both the physical and immaterial body in motion, moving between individual and collective experience. Each session is accompanied by a voice coach, a musician, and a somatic practitioner. Participants are invited to enter into an open, fluid choreographic practice that takes shape collectively through movement, sound, and listening.
UM~A – Open Rehearsal approaches the creativity of the moving, breathing, pulsating body as a counterpoint to necropolitical structures and to the social divisions and polarization that shape the present. By opening up an ongoing artistic research process, the gathering invites a broader public to take part in its development and creates space for embodied knowledge, feeling, and emotion.
Let something emerge. Remember that we share common roots, and that breath connects us. Become attentive to what this connection might mean. Listen. Raise our voices. Make space for coming together.
