Healing Sisterhoods

Between 26th – 31st of August 2023, Haus der Kulturen der Welt and partner organizations will be hosting the School of Quilombismo — a program of workshops, film screenings, cooking sessions, lectures, and more, aimed at creating accessible spaces for collective learning, active solidarity, and self-realization. The program is inspired by the philosophy of Quilombismo, which in turn follows the ways of life that have developed in the quilombos — settlements founded by people who have escaped and freed from enslavement, which Abdias Nascimento has referred to as societies of “fraternal and free reunion, or encounter; solidarity, living together, and existential communion” (source).

At Spore Initiative, and in the framework of the School of Quilombismo, we would like to explore healing spaces which, in a health system marked by racism and discrimination, create much-needed places of solidarity and self-determination. To this end, we invite FLINTA* participants to engage in hands-on healing workshops and conversations about forms of applied health, connections to nature, everyday rituals, and body awareness. The focus lies within the diversity of healing knowledges and an understanding of health that considers sociopolitical factors as well as loneliness, alienation, trauma, and stress. In this way we hope to create together a space for dialogue and encounters in which alternative or complementary models, projects, and spaces of accessible and collective care can be shared, lived, and conceived.
