Seeds of Ecological Struggle

Join us to discuss – with activists, artists, and scholars working on land grabs, privatizations, harmful infrastructure, and neocolonial appropriations – how ecological activism can be sustained, narrated, and multiplied.

The workshop is a collaboration between Spore and Kollektiv Quotidien, who are editing a book on Activist Ecologies spanning Chile to Indonesia, Palestine/Lebanon to Ivory Coast, and Berlin to Florence. Contributors to the volume – individuals and groups who have mobilized in very different contexts – will share situated knowledge about why grassroots resistance is necessary and what it demands: resistance that refuses to compromise with top-down environmental politics and that advances more-than-human care. 
  

We focus on the "where" and "when" of organizing. Through which complicities and networks does activism arise? How does ecological struggle grow out of the everyday care practices of the many, human and nonhuman, who sustain it? And how can artistic practices, from collective stitching to performance and documentary film, join these struggles without extracting from them? 
  

Together we will devise strategies to: 

• connect sites of resistance across the planet, while recognizing how intersectional inequality shapes who bears the climate burden and who can adapt 
• foreground activist approaches grounded in local, Indigenous, pre-colonial, and pre-modern ideas of ecological coexistence 
• attend to the spatial conditions that make more-than-human care possible 
• show that struggle is alive and responsive to shared problems, building solidarity and nurturing hope in both the joys and the difficulties of defiant action
