In this Open Reading Group session, we will delve into Pollution Is Colonialism by Max Liboiron.
What if pollution isn’t just an environmental issue, but a continuation of colonial violence? In this groundbreaking work, Liboiron reframes pollution as a structure of power that extends and enforces settler colonialism—materially, scientifically, and politically.
Drawing from Indigenous theory, feminist science studies, and anti-colonial methods, Pollution Is Colonialism challenges dominant approaches to environmental science and remediation. Through stories of plastic research, laboratory practices, and land-based ethics, Liboiron argues that how we conduct science and address pollution must be accountable to the lands and communities most impacted by extractive logics.
This is not simply a book about toxins or waste, but about the assumptions that underlie environmental action—who sets the terms, who benefits, and who is harmed. Together, we will engage with Liboiron’s different approach rooted in humility, reciprocity, and consent.
