Motherhood and working in the arts or culture are difficult to combine. Gallery openings in the evening, residencies with no childcare, barely any time to think or create: the system is not built for kids or the work of caring for them. Artists and cultural workers who become parents – especially those read as women – often end up pausing their careers, sometimes for good.

Caring for (M)Others is a space to reflect on and support each other through this experience. It is space that understands children as an enrichment within the artistic and cultural context rather than an obstacle.
Over three afternoon sessions at Spore, mothers working in art and culture come together: The first session is given over to personal reflection, the second to sharing knowledge with guest speakers, and the third to laying the groundwork for an ongoing community, with each session opening and closing in guided meditation.
Everything shared stays in the room, and we keep the atmosphere respectful and tolerate no form of exclusion, treating each other and the stories we tell with care so that boundaries are always respected. Children of all ages are warmly welcome! We start out together. From there, the children can play in a separate room, in the garden, or join a workshop of their own.
We deliberately use the term 'mother' in its broadest sense. This includes all FLINTA* individuals (women, lesbians, intersex people, non-binary people, trans people, and agender people) who identify with this experience, regardless of their biological or legal status as parents.
