Over generations, colonial and neocolonial violence has fractured lifeworlds, yet people continue to live in those worlds and fight for justice. What happens when entire groups are exposed to extreme violence over a long period of time, resulting in transgenerational trauma as a normal response to abnormal conditions of violence? What are the conditions for overcoming this trauma?
Marcella Katjijova, a clinical psychologist, is a descendant of survivors of Germany's first genocide against the Ovaherero and Nama peoples in present-day Namibia. Her work addresses the psychosocial aftermath of this genocide with communities in Namibia, where justice is still being withheld by Germany.
Vilma Duque is a social psychologist and supervisor. She has worked in post-conflict regions for decades with survivors of the genocide under Guatemala's military dictatorship. She also accompanies people in exile around the world who have fled extreme violence and political persecution.
In the workshop, they will present their approaches and experiences, inviting an exchange with those who work in the psychosocial field or are interested in reclaiming the political and emancipatory perspective of psychosocial work.
