On Thursday, February 12, curators and editors Kris Dittel and Aneta Rostkowska present the book Unruly Kinships.
Unruly Kinships explores the possibilities and forms of kinship by examining how relationships with and in the world are created and sustained. This publication is the outcome of a three-year research project that included a study group series and an exhibition accompanied by a public program of lectures, performances, and workshops.
Through essays, artistic reflections, and conversations, Unruly Kinships reimagines kinship as an ongoing process of relational experimentation rather than something given. The book is structured around three chapters and features contributions from artists, theorists, and writers. It engages with unruly desires, ancestral connections, and liberatory forms of care. By challenging the primacy of blood relations and the nuclear family, Unruly Kinships invites us to reconsider care, solidarity, and interdependence in contemporary social and ecological contexts.
During the event, the editors will discuss the project's development process and address the publication's key themes and questions. The presentation will be followed by a sharing session, with space for dialogue and collective reflection. Audience members are invited to share their own experiences with chosen families, community care networks, or unconventional kinship structures. We will explore questions such as: How do we navigate the gap between expectations and lived realities of care? What sustains relationships that exist outside recognized frameworks? What barriers do we encounter and what possibilities emerge?
In the spirit of kinship and collective care, light refreshments will be provided.
This book presentation is aimed at artists, cultural workers, researchers, students and anyone interested in rethinking care, relationships, and social organization beyond normative family structures.
