The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic was proclaimed 50 years ago. Since then, the former colonial power Spain, and the Moroccan occupation have systematically obstructed its full development. Today, Western Sahara remains the last colony in Africa. Violence, plunder, and displacement have shaped the history of the Sahrawi people. Yet this history is also marked by resistance, grounded in the political and legal foundations of an independent state.
An expert panel of Spanish and Sahrawi jurists and activists will discuss the political and legal aspects of a people’s struggle for liberation, from its history to its future. The discussion will emphasize the significance of the constitution of a state and its internal and external development over the past 50 years.
Today, numerous organizations worldwide—including here in Germany—support the struggle for an independent Western Sahara. This event offers us the opportunity to examine the extent to which the constitution of the Sahrawi Republic and its claims under international law are central pillars in the struggle for freedom and self-determination.
