The First 54 Years
An Abbreviated Manual for Military Occupation
Avi Mograbi | Fr, Fi, Is, D | 108" | 2021
In a somewhat anonymous living room, a “professor” played by director Avi Mograbi gives a lecture on the long-term strategy used by Israel in its then 54-year occupation of the Palestinian territories. With the cold distance expected by his status, the teacher explains the military and political strategies behind one of the longest military occupations in history.
Veterans of the Israeli army testify before the camera about their missions to provide painful evidence of his theories, while footage of the abuses toward the civil population haunt the screen.
Avi Mograbi is the director who has perhaps investigated and denounced the consequences of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza most. In 2004, he became one of the founding members of Breaking the Silence, a whistleblower organization that encourages former soldiers to testify to the systemic crimes and human rights abuses of the occupation forces.
The film will be followed by a Q&A with the film's director, Avi Mograbi, moderated by Hadas Emma Kedar.
