Since the beginning of the war in Syria, different social and political models have emerged. While the Assad regime maintained centralized and authoritarian rule for a long time, an alternative system has emerged in northern and eastern Syria (Rojava): Democratic Confederalism. This model is based on grassroots democracy, ecological sustainability and women's liberation as central pillars. It offers a possible model for a pluralistic, multi-ethnic society.

Women play a key role in this - both politically and militarily. Structures such as the Kongra Star Women's Association, the Armenian Women's Union in Syria and the YPJ Women's Defense Units stand for the radical emancipation of women.
