Miradas I explores the value of land, the knowledge, and deep commitment that comes with living on, with, and from it. Three films zoom into stories and contexts that give insight to the lives of peasants facing struggles such as land grabbing or the contamination of their soil and habitats on a daily basis.
These films, curated by Adriana Otero Puerto, will be shown as accompanying program for the exhibitions every Saturday from the 23rd of June until the 09th of September 2023.

Directed by Adriana Otero Puerto, Mexico, 2014

El valor de la tierra reflects on one of the gravest situations currently affecting Mexico’s rural areas: the depredation of fields caused by the buying and selling of communal land between businesses and farmers. Basilio is a peasant who refuses to sell his land in a town in Yucatán , in which most of his peers have already sold theirs. This documentary gives an insight into the difficult circumstances that peasants are confronted with every day and lays out important questions about the future of the countryside.

Tierra mía (This land of mine)
Directed by Pedro González-Rubio, Mexico, 2018
74 min, Spanish with English subtitles
A father and daughter search for an agave in the foothills of the volcanoes to extract aguamiel (mead). Three generations of women walk in the desert of Zapotitlán to find the delicacy of the area, endemic caterpillars. A baptism brings together the women of a family in the Cuetzalan highlands to prepare an ancient recipe for atole and mixiotes. An old farmer blesses corn seeds together with his neighbors at the entrance of a cave, believed to be the entrance to the Tlalocan (underworld) for the Nahuatl culture among others. A couple gathers the season's harvest to sell at a local market. This whole universe takes place in the same region of Mexico, the most vast and rich in dishes that represent the mixture of two cultures, pre-Hispanic and Spanish.
