Comics can offer ways of telling stories that are difficult to accommodate elsewhere: personal, political, fragmentary, visual, and deeply rooted in specific communities. This evening looks at how the medium can open up space for perspectives that remain underrepresented within mainstream publishing and cultural institutions.
The conversation brings together questions of authorship, access, and visibility. Who gets to tell their own stories, who gets published, and under what conditions? We will also consider the role of independent publishers in supporting emerging and underrepresented voices, building new readerships, and creating space for forms of expression that might otherwise struggle to find a platform.
Du Bút is an independent comics publisher based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Its program spans comics, graphic novels, picture books, illustrated books, art books, and more experimental forms of visual storytelling. At the heart of its work is a commitment to finding, supporting, and publishing distinctive contemporary voices, while strengthening the place of comics in Vietnam as an artistic and literary form in its own right.
DaThe conversation will be held in English. However, a community-supported translation into German will be available.
