Around Emerging Assemblages is a collective lecture performance conceived by artist Erzë Dinarama, developed out of Lulebora nuk çel më. Emerging Assemblages, the installation first presented as the Kosovo Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Biennale of La Biennale di Venezia.
Based on field research with farmers across Kosovo, the installation explores how climate disruption affects predictive climate technologies and embodied ecological knowledge. Its relational calendar of sixteen scents chronicles six moments of disruption—late frost, new hail, early heat, late rain, early frost, and absent snow—through which shifting seasonal rhythms reshape ecological relationships and the knowledge that stems from them.
At Spore Initiative, part of that calendar unfolds as a performance with eight invited guests working in agriculture, social and ecological activism, the natural sciences, and anthropology, among other fields. Drawing on their own research, practices, experiences, and geographies, they carry the farmers' accounts into other stories and other ways of knowing. Moving between narratives and locations, the performance gathers accounts of changing relations with plants, climate, landscapes, species, and seasonal markers, while the smells developed from the farmers' descriptions circulate among the audience, accompanying the readings and contributions.
Smells for the installation and the performance were developed in the laboratory of artist and researcher Sissel Tolaas. Around Emerging Assemblages is the result of conversations between Erzë Dinarama, the contributing participants, and Spore Initiative's programming team.
