Through a Thousand and One Jewels and the stories of their guardians, descendants of the Jewish-Muslim world in North Africa, jewels are scattered throughout the film like living remnants of a pre-colonial world that refuses to disappear and resists the colonial violence that separated Jews and Muslims. By sharing these stories and engaging in the making of the jewelry together, the participants renew a truncated transmission of knowledge and know-how, thus suspending the museum verdict that, through looting, attempts to seal the history of this Jewish-Muslim world by relegating it to “the past.”

The film follows the testimonies of these non-experts: the way in which descendants remember fragments of knowledge passed down to them about the life, the secrets of these objects, and the shared traditions of which they were an integral part. The film is conceived as a necklace of tales, where the plurality of voices intertwines with the lines of the Kol Nidrei prayer. This prayer runs through the film like a golden thread, revoking false promises and resurrecting an anticolonial imaginary of the ummah.

A conversation with the filmmaker will follow the screening. Organised by the Jewish Bund in collaboration with AL.Berlin.

About Anti-Colonial Film Night:

Together we gather to watch, discuss, and exchange around anti-colonial films from across geographies and the revolutionary struggles they represent. Each screening features one or more local community groups who will lead the conversation, linking the film’s themes to our concrete realities and struggles today. These discussions bring together diverse anti-colonial perspectives at this shared juncture of empire and capital. We envision these encounters as spaces for collective learning, questioning, and reflection — and as invitations to engage more deeply by supporting the work, actions, and initiatives of the participating groups.

Language accessibility:
Films will be shown in their original languages with subtitles whenever available. Discussions will be held in English, with the option of simultaneous interpretation if required.
