This year marks the 111th anniversary of Aghet, the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire. We want to come together to create a space for remembrance—a space shaped by the reading of poetry, the listening to music, and by getting creative together. The commemoration will be led by the Ararat Kollektiv and followed by a creative workshop hosted by Armenischen Jugendverband Berlin-Brandenburg (AJBB).
At the same time, there will be a screening of the documentary Country of Dust in the auditorium.
In addition to this form of remembrance, we also want to engage in a political discussion. Germany’s role and shared responsibility in the genocide against the Armenians still receives little to no attention in public discourse—and this is just one of many cases. We want to provide a space for voices from various contexts affected by Germany’s complicity.
How do Herero and Nama, Jewish, Palestinian, and Greek communities view German responsibility? How can we unite in resistance against genocides? What role do women* and feminist perspectives play in our struggles?
A panel discussion will take place with speakers from the aforementioned communities, moderated by the Ararat Collective. Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and engage in a collective discussion. April 24 marks the Armenian Genocide, but our struggles extend far beyond that. In the end, we are rising up against the same system in the fight for justice.
This event is intended for the Armenian community and others affected by genocide, as well as anyone who identifies with our cause.
