On November 2nd, the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, FilmLab Palestine is organizing over 500 Palestinian film screenings around the world. The global effort is a show of solidarity with Palestine, an act of amplification for censored Palestinian voices and a contribution to shifting the distorted narrative.
As part of this year’s edition Palinale, ALFILM and Rawy Films will present a screening of Tewfik Salehs classic The Dupes (1972).
Set in the aftermath of the 1948 Nakba, the film follows three Palestinians who risk everything to cross the desert in search of a better life in Kuwait. Adapted from Ghassan Kanafani’s novel Men in the Sun, and recently restored, this landmark of Arab cinema lays bare the despair of displacement and the complicity of Arab regimes in the suffering of refugees.
Tewfik Saleh (1926–2013) was a leading Egyptian filmmaker known for his innovative style and exploration of political oppression and class struggle.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with special guests Ammar Kandeel and Salih Dabbah, moderated by filmmaker and Palinale curator Viola Shafik.
