The event includes an illustration workshop, a reading, and a discussion with author Eymard Toledo.
Naná lives in a village on the banks of the Amazon. The people’s lives are shaped by the warm, humid climate and the rhythm of the seasons. During the rainy season, when the river overflows its banks, the people let the water flow through their homes, and the village children travel to school by boat.
One day, as Naná sits on the riverbank with her fishing rod, waiting for a fish to bite, a canoe appears. Inside sits a mother with her children. The oldest boy skillfully steers the boat through the current with a paddle. Naná wonders where these people are headed. Shortly afterward, the boy from the canoe shows up at the village school. His name is Kayabu, and he sits next to Naná. The two become friends despite being constantly amazed by each other’s worlds.
This story of friendship offers a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon, whose habitat is threatened by industrial deforestation and resource extraction. "Brazil once had 1,000 indigenous groups. Today, there are only about 200.
