In September 2022, Jîna Mahsa Amini died after her arrest by Iran's morality police. The movement that grew out of her death, Jin, Jiyan, Azadî – Woman, Life, Freedom – has since become a demand for self-determination, equality, and human rights that carries far beyond Iran.
Jîna Day brings that memory and the things that have grown it since to Neukölln for an afternoon and an evening. Rojavida and Blue Boat Books have put together a day for people with and without Kurdish backgrounds to remember Jîna, and to remember everyone still standing up for their rights and their freedom, in Iran and elsewhere. Grief and solidarity sit side by side here, in conversation as much as in music, in making things by hand, and over shared food.
Things open in the Auditorium with a reading that introduces the Jîna project and the books that came out of it, followed by students from the Schule in der Köllnischen Heide on how they find their courage and speak up. Over in the Studio, Blue Boat Books helps you make a small book of your own. The evening ends with Gulê Bulgurcu, Ahmet Tirgil, and Durul Canberk İres playing in the Atrium, where a bazaar with food, books, accessories, and clothing by Bayat runs all afternoon.
