The participants take a tour through the garden at Spore and trace water’s path through the ecosystem. We will take clues from plants, soil and environmental indicators to reveal water in the forms which are invisible to our eyes to be able to ask it a few questions: Which roles does water play and how does it animate life as it passes through an environment? What happens with plants and soil as they experience water shortage? How long does it take to recover from drought? Which techniques do plants use to accommodate the shortage of water?
Global warming and changing weather patterns are driving the natural water supply into a cycle of abundance and scarcity: one time there is too much water, another time too little. However, the alternation between abundance and scarcity of a natural resource is not something unnatural. Rather, what is unnatural, is the belief that a certain resource can be available for consumption indefinitely.
If we “zoom out” and switch perspective from the Spore garden to the urban area of Berlin, a similar question remains: how does the city manage its water cycle? How does it react to the environmental clues to better adapt for the periods of water scarcity and extreme abundance?
