The distinction between humans and animals is at the root of modern thought. It is also one of the first things children must learn to become part of "rational," adult society. Humans think; animals don't. Humans are persons; animals are not.

In eleven essays, she explores contemporary animisms, the concept of non-human persons, evolution, freedom, the long-standing tradition of men rating animals (and animals who couldn't care less), and dreaming as a form of resistance.
