How did Israel come about to wage a war of revenge and unprecedented destruction in Gaza, with prominent ministers calling for resettlement of the Gaza Strip and the complete annexation of the West Bank?
The answer to this question does not begin and on October 7th. For the past 20 years, under the leadership of Netanyahu and the settlement movement, an extreme-right religious ideology of Jewish supremacy has taken over the political landscape in Israel – becoming the dominant force in the Israeli government.
What was the process that brought the ideological settlers, once marginal actors in the Israeli right, to an unparalleled position of power? Were they replicating previous Zionist political strategies of land conquest, or do they represent a different type of fundamentalist religious politics? What is the relationship between this ascending Israeli right and the growing extreme right and authoritarian movements worldwide, and specifically in Germany? How can progressive and left-wing forces in Israel and Germany fight and isolate this political threat?
