Children playfully immerse themselves in the world of picture books and engage creatively with stories, illustrations, and their own ideas.

Through group activities such as large-scale drawings, mixing natural pigments, weaving, or working with clay, the children are invited not only to listen to stories but to actively experience stories through different media and take them further.

The class will work with the following picture book:

Do! / Hengadi, Ramesh & Dhadpe, Shantaram / Baobab Books – a picture book from India.

“Run, pull, play, draw… these people are always on the move and always have something to do. Drawn by two artists in the tradition of the Indian Warli, whose artwork still decorates the walls of their homes today, the book portrays a community full of life. On every page, we can explore, smile, and join in the action.

Do! was handcrafted in a workshop in India using the screen-printing technique—of course under fair working conditions.

In this local workshop, the book becomes a work of art: the white ink printed on recycled paper brings the mud walls of the Warli houses to life, as if we were visiting western India ourselves.”

The workshop aims to introduce children to the culture and way of life of the Warli in India in a playful and engaging way. They learn to observe and interpret traditional Warli drawings, discovering everyday scenes and community life in the process. As the children enact and creatively reinterpret individual scenes, the connection between text and image deepens. At the same time, they gain insight into artistic techniques such as screen printing and learn about the importance of sustainable production. Active engagement with the images, the workshop fosters perception, creativity, and intercultural awareness.
