After the beautiful success of the last three BAKE SALES, we are happy to announce the fourth BAKE SALE for JUSTICE! Berliner hobby bakers, bakeries & restaurants donate cakes, cookies & bakes for a good cause!
This time, we’re collecting donations for urgent community support for Nyala Sudan.
Nyala, the capital of South Darfur and the second largest city in Sudan has been heavily impacted by the war since April 2023. Raging war between the main warring parties of RSF and SAF has left the city destroyed, with critical civilian infrastructures like hospitals and markets looted and ransacked. It is estimated that more than 1 million people are facing famine, sexual violence and disease, with the MSF reporting that women and children are dying of preventable conditions in Darfur/Sudan, as their health needs surpass what MSF can respond to. It is also important to note that even before this war, the city hosted one of the largest IDP (internally displaced people) camps in the country. When it comes to education, key needs include rehabilitation of infrastructure, provision of school materials, and incentives for teachers. Heavy militarization of the area, lack of humanitarian aid and gross negligence of the international community means that most aid has been from the community and their efforts for survival during this time. To address food scarcity, community kitchens have been set up in several neighborhoods in Nyala, just as groups of individuals bring children together in makeshift schools.
Community organizers and leaders need our support now more than ever, as resources are beyond scarce, and a ceasefire is not imminent.
There are no banking systems operating in Nyala, Sudan due to the war. Therefore, money will be transferred via BankIk بنكك (a banking app with fees involved) directly to community members organizing resources in Nyala. All receipts and the usage of money itself will be accounted for.
