This workshop for all age groups is based on the book “A Stitch out of Time”, by artist Anaïs Beaulieu, published by Tara Books.
On the invitation of Tara Books, Anaïs Beaulieu created a technique of embroidery on plastic to depict endangered plants. In a two-hour session she will be presenting her work and guiding children and adults to create their own embroidered pattern.
With the participants, she will address the issue of endangered species in various contexts while embroiding on used plastic bags.
A Stitch Out of Time features images of her embroidery on throwaway plastic bags, typically used for disposing waste. The book plays with two powerful themes: environmental degradation symbolised by the ubiquitous take-over of our surroundings by plastic and the slow time of creation, whether of a tree, or a piece of embroidery. A Stitch Out of Time is a result of collaborative artisanal processes: embroidery, tailoring, screen-printing and book-binding.
