Bees don’t look the same everywhere, but they have one thing in common: regardless of where they live, they are important pollinators who contribute to a healthy ecosystem. But bees are endangered: it is time for us to understand their importance and the role they play for the web of life.
In this workshop, we’ll imagine travelling to meet the Melipona bee. The children will learn about Yucatán and its native stingless Melipona bee through the leporello book Del Códice Maya Xunáan Kaab al Códice Madrid and the animation El zumbido de Báalam Kaab realized together with a group of children working with the agroecological School U Yits Ka'an. We will then relate the Melipona to the European bee. What are the differences? What do they have in common? And what methodologies of mutual care between bees and humans can we learn about?
After this, with help from illustrator Katja Spitzer, the children will work in groups to create 5 leporelli in 5 different colours.
